A Way Out
Each mark, image, or object in this painting divulges the artist’s lived experience onto the canvas, creating a unique form of self-portraiture. Window-like shapes tell a story about the isolation of chronic illness and the shared human experience of being alone. As small, contemplative artworks, Alvarez’s painterly objects echo the process of journal-making, holding autobiographical images that change as time passes.
Tania Alvarez explores themes of impermanence, voyeurism, and home through paintings of quotidian views. Through mirrored images, patterns, and repeated images, her artworks embody how memories evolve and, ultimately, shape our identities. With her relatable house imagery, the artist allows viewers to connect to her work through their similar experiences.

③ Artist:
Tania Alvarez explores themes of impermanence, voyeurism, and home through her paintings of quotidian views. These works are about the evolution of memories—specifically how memories change over time—tracked through mirrored images, patterns, and repeated images of the places or experiences that shaped her identity. Alvarez creates psychological effects relating to temporality, change, or disembodiment through distorted scale and perspective. By consistently returning to a house image as an autobiographical element, she allows viewers to connect to her work through their personal experiences.
