Substance in a Gentle Steam
In this painting, the artist ponders to what extent young women will go to accelerate their life stages, leaving behind lumps of innocence. The image is of a young woman washing her face as the remains of her mascara, eye shadow, and eyeliner stream down her face and transform her back into a child.
As with many of the paintings in this series, this image questions society’s hyper-fixation with rushing through adolescence to achieve maturity before one’s peers. The title alludes to the cleansing of a woman’s makeup as well as the substances people start using as they mature, ruining lives and relationships.
In her painting practice, Dylan Rose Rheingold explores the effects and experiences of contemporary American “girl culture” through visual symbols of her adolescence, femininity, and a heterogeneous cultural background. Her coming-of-age stories highlight humble difficulties like braces, birth control, heavy periods, and stretch marks by exploring everyday emotions and quotidian spaces.

Dylan Rose Rheingold was born in 1997 in New York City, NY, where she currently lives. She received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, NY (2022) and her BFA from Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY (2019).
She has mounted solo exhibitions at Jupiter Contemporary in Miami, FL (2022) and Selenas Mountain in Brooklyn, NY (2021).
