This painting began with the artist having a feeling about a certain European-ness, and a potato soon became a placeholder for that feeling. After committing to this subject, he made a close-up, tightly cropped image of hands engaged in an action—a recurring motif in contemporary art. In an absurdist twist, he replaced the fingernails on the hand with cockroaches.
