Brussels-based, multidisciplinary artist Shishi San started tufting in 2019 and began exploring the sculptural potential of the medium in 2022 when she made her first "fluffy" vase. She is inspired by Chinese vases, with their colorful shapes and motifs, colors and shapes but wanted to create her own version of them, inspired by modern kitsch. These contrasting aesthetics are connected by her love of nature, which provides endless inspiration.

About the artist:

Known for her “fluffy” hand-tufted vases, tapestries, and rugs, Shishi San started customizing her clothes with embroideries as a teenager, expanding the process from there. After making her own clothes, she soon realized she had a knack for textiles and now works with knitting and tufting. Her artworks are marked by a love of nature and design mixed with an unapologetically exuberant and playful aesthetic that references both ancient and contemporary art history.

Multidisciplinary textile artist Shishi San was born in 1993 and lives in Brussels, Belgium.

She has exhibited at That's what X Said Gallery in Brussels, Belgium, and Hashimoto Contemporary in Los Angeles, CA.
