Loathings
This new print edition from the renowned Nashville-based painter Shannon Cartier Lucy is inspired by director Coralie Fargeat’s acclaimed, controversial 2024 film 'The Substance,' about an aging actress who goes to extremes to recapture her youth. Titled 'Loathings,' Lucy’s new work is like a meta-portrait of the film’s protagonist, Elisabeth Sparkle (played by Demi Moore), depicting an unseen figure’s hand scratching out the eyes of an image of Sparkle with a red pen.

③ Artist:
With a career of endless experimentation spanning over twenty years, Shannon Cartier Lucy (b. 1977, Nashville, TN) is one of the most celebrated figurative painters working today.
Raised with a schizophrenic father, Cartier Lucy paints seemingly ordinary and familiar scenes in a realistic style that are also alienating for their surreal details, poses and compositions.
Cartier Lucy infuses her painting with uncanny and impossible situations that become a new normal in her work. The artist is a cantor of the inner world; her practice can be seen as a mirror of a dystopic society, whether intentional or accidental, reflecting a sociocultural landscape filled with hallucinatory and contradictory information.
