About the artist:
Mia Scarpa sees her practice more as object-making than creating images. She uses different mark-making methods, mediums, and surfaces, offering a wide variety of results. Although much of her work could appear arbitrary on its own, when grouped, the pieces speak to each other, adding a larger “world-building” theme to Scarpa’s oeuvre. She incorporates unique references into her imagery, both specific and ambiguous. Scarpa’s practice is informed by areas of New England where she grew up—Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island—as well as her current home of Los Angeles.
Mia Scarpa was born in 1997 in Middleton, MA, and lives in Los Angeles, CA. She received a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI (2020).
Scarpa has shown her work at John Doe Gallery in Los Angeles, CA; Martha’s in Austin, TX; Control Gallery in Los Angeles, CA); Dreamchild Gallery in Los Angeles, CA); Guerrero Gallery in Los Angeles, CA; and House of Seiko in San Francisco, CA.
