This artwork of boy dogs catcalling girl dogs is part of a larger narrative about dogs appropriating cat culture in Dominescu’s work. By tackling topics such as the representation of women in the media, ecological decay, and post-digital culture, Megan Dominescu creates contemporary textile art through rug hooking and embroidery. Trained as a painter, Dominescu carefully selects bright colors and contrasting textures of recycled fabric strips and second-hand sweaters to create prosaic pop mythology in fibers. Through her process, our hypermediated world becomes an epic journey in soft materials. Dominescu takes on today’s banalities and cliches with disarming humor and nonchalance, underlining the absurdity of our branded and Instagramable realities.
