Passageway
This picture depicts a red figure laying on his back, with his knees raised and his feet planted on the ground. A second blue figure lays perpendicular across the first figure's torso. While touching, the pair are passing through one another as if they were ghosts—blurring the boundaries of where one body ends and another begins. In the composition, the landscape is made of the same blues and reds as the figures, with the sky and land serving as complementary opposites.
Laura Berger creates sensuous paintings centered around themes of interdependence and self-understanding. This work uses intuitive color palettes and dreamlike minimalistic environments to depict archetypal figures and their interactions. The artist's work articulates experiences and memories that feel just out of reach—perhaps existing on a more spiritual or emotional plane.

Laura Berger was a 2021 recipient of the Hopper Prize, juried by Maria Elena Ortiz (Curator, Perez Art Museum Miami) and Shelby Nimrod (Assistant Curator, MIT List Visual Arts Center).
Solo exhibitions of Berger’s have taken place at Hashimoto Contemporary in New York City (2020) and Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco (2018).
