Jennie C. Jones is a sonic and visual artist whose interdisciplinary practice includes audio collages, paintings, sculptures and works on paper. The artist's work explores the formal and conceptual junctures between modernist abstraction and Black avant-garde music, particularly jazz. Jones uses unconventional materials to highlight the perception of sound within the visual arts—while reflecting on the legacy of modernism and minimalism.

BIO:

Jennie C. Jones was born in 1968. Jones received an MFA from Rutgers University, Mason Gross School of the Arts in New Brunswick, NJ in 1996, and BFA, with Fellowship, from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois in 1991.

Jones is the recipient of a 2013 Joan Mitchell Award. The artist attended the Rauschenberg Foundation Residency in Captiva, Florida in the spring of 2014. A solo exhibition of the artist's work, Higher Resonance, was presented at The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, in Washington, DC in 2013. Other exhibitions include: Compilation at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston in Texas; RPM (revolutions per minute) at The Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut; and Constant Structure at The Arts Club of Chicago in Illinois. These Mournful Shores was a site specific public outdoor sculpture consisting of a 16 ft. aeolian harp—a mediated sound piece that was included in the first outdoor exhibition at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
