① Artwork:
Knotty
This painting investigates both banal domesticity and private emotions. The subject’s hair is an array of tangled knots, so a woman has to assist in the “detangling” process—both physically and emotionally. As such, her tears symbolize not only her physical pain but also her inner turmoil.
In her painting practice, Dylan Rose Rheingold explores the effects and experiences of contemporary American “girl culture” through visual symbols of her adolescence, femininity, and a heterogeneous cultural background. Her coming-of-age stories highlight humble difficulties like braces, birth control, heavy periods, and stretch marks by exploring everyday emotions and quotidian spaces.
