This artwork depicts the playful gray foxes the artist has witnessed in the foothills near their coastal mountain home. In the painting, a red sunset glows behind golden hills and brushy green trees as one fox happily bounds over another. To the artist, the gray fox’s jumps and dives were reminiscent of how a human child plays games, like leapfrog.

Andrew Catanese

Andrew Catanese’s art searches for new ways to understand ourselves and our relationships with the natural world. In their work, the body becomes an ever-changing site of transformation or a bridge between realms where they meld aspects of human, animal and vegetal forms. Catanese blurs the earth’s great living divides, as defined by Bruno Latour (human and animal, nature and culture, organic and technological), to better comprehend how deeply they are intertwined. Their work insists on a fluid and transformative understanding of our bodies as cyborgs constructed from animals, plants and technology. Ultimately, by subverting traditional forms of dualism, Catanese’s paintings find ways to discuss new constructions of the self.
