ARTISTS CELEBRATE PLATFORM'S FIRST ANNIVERSARY
ARTISTS CELEBRATE PLATFORM'S FIRST ANNIVERSARY
Mie Yim, Tom Anholt, Emily Furr and other artists have been keeping busy since they first appeared on Platform last year. They spoke with us about their most recent projects and shared what they're looking forward to most.
What have you been up to since last we met?
I have been a busy bee! Several art fairs, a couple of solo shows, a bunch of group shows. There’s a momentum with demand for my work, and I have the energy to paint, so I’m practically living and breathing oil paint.
If there’s an element of the Platform experience that was particularly memorable, we’d love to hear it.
Pretty much immediately, there was attention from all over the world. I’ve gotten in touch with so many wonderful curators, galleries, and most importantly, other artists. I’m forever grateful!
Is there anything that has really inspired you lately?
I am still inspired by New York City. Things have been hard lately and we fantasize about leaving, but then I realize where else can I just take the subway and see Holbein? Matisse? Cecilia Vicuna? The other night, we went to the Metropolitan Opera to see Akhnaten. It was the last performance, so who comes out to take a bow? Philip Glass! We walk out into Lincoln Center Plaza and there’s Silent Disco, a free Summer event where people are dancing their butts off to the music coming through rented headphones with a giant disco ball spinning in the center. Where else can you get that?
We’re creating a playlist for our one-year anniversary: what should we put on it?

Oops, I can’t stop!
What are you excited for this summer?
I'm looking forward to the Yaddo artist residency in July. In August, I will be going back up to Brattleboro to do a community project, “Chalk on the sidewalk.” I will station people throughout, and they will create whatever drawing they wish. Meanwhile, I will draw something–some kind of connector, like branches, conduit or veins to connect them all. We will have a crazy entity/tree-like form at the end. My bucket list place is Morocco and we are going in October for my birthday. I have total cabin fever and wanderlust from Covid hell!
What are you reading this summer?
Duncan Hannah’s (RIP) 20th Century Boy. Re-reading Lucy Lippard’s From the Center.
What’s your summer look/uniform?
Cut-offs, top and bottom. Birkenstocks.
What have you been up to since last we met?
I’ve been busy! I’ve had a few shows, most recently New Lands with Josh Lilley in London. It was great to show there again. The last few were COVID-disrupted. Other than that, you’ll mostly find me at the lake with my little daughter, Ada.
If there’s an element of the Platform experience that was particularly memorable, we’d love to hear it.
It was such an interesting global experience. My first real involvement with a virtual platform and it was incredible to see the international engagement. I had lovely messages from around the world, and one of the works ended up doing a huge tour and ending up back in Berlin!
What are you looking forward to in the year ahead?
I’m looking forward to being with my family in Devon in July. We’ve all been apart a lot and live in various places, and it will be amazing to all be reunited. I can’t wait to meet my twin sister Maddy’s first baby, Opal. Seeing our little ones together will be a magical moment.
Is there anything that has really inspired you lately?
Looking very closely at a ladybird with Ada’s magnifying glass, seeing my boxing coach Ferdi Pilz destroy his opponent in the second round and diving into cold water with good mates in Cava Grande, Sicily.

I've been looking at Francis Picabia's machine drawings from the 1910s, especially the ones he did for the Dada publication 291. I am experimenting with reimagining these drawings through today's lens.

What have you been up to since last we met?
The last 12 months have been very busy with shows, and so far in 2022, I’ve had two back-to-back solo presentations. The most recent, Here Comes the Night, with Spencer Brownstone Gallery closed on April 30, and this also marked the conclusion of an extensive two-year work process through which I reconnected with my European heritage–in particular Early Renaissance painting.
If there’s an element of the Platform experience that was particularly memorable, we’d love to hear it.
Thank you very much for both invitations to participate. It’s an honor and great pleasure working with you. I’ve been enjoying each month’s dense selection and wide spectrum of international artists a lot.
I’m fascinated to see how my work is presented, and how context gets built through images, features and questionnaires–very inspiring, and for sure I learned a lot.
Is there anything that has really inspired you lately?
My current travels. I just got back from Florence, where I revisited many of my favorite Early Renaissance paintings, such as Botticelli’s Primavera, Adam and Eve by Lucas Cranach the Elder in the Uffizi Gallery (I went two days), Fra Angelico’s frescos in the Museo of San Marco, and the Giottos in the Basilica of Santa Croce. It was astonishing to see these paintings in real life, after living and painting through them in my imagination for so long in my studio in Brooklyn. They played a crucial part in my making of the past years, and three of these historical works are directly referenced in my current presentation on Platform.
I also love the Italian enjoyment of life, and the meeting of their nonchalance and their profound tradition of art, which is everywhere you look. On the contrary, Germany, especially the rural side where I’m from and am staying right now, is quiet and rather empty. I especially notice this now, having spent the last two years in New York City due to the Covid pandemic travel ban. It’s important for me to be connected to my roots, for all kinds of growth, and it’s crucial for the European-American crossover of my work.
We’re creating a playlist for our one year anniversary: what should we put on it?
"Faith" by George Michael, and it’s always good to have an Italian pop song in the mixI pick "Azzurro" by Adriano Celentano.
What are you excited for this summer?
I can’t wait to be back to my studio in Brooklyn, loaded with ideas from traveling.
I’ll be surviving NYC’s heat painting next to the AC. Even though I’m not made for the hot humid summer at all, I love the laziness of August in New York City.
I’m currently enjoying the cool summer weather and long days and nights in Northern Germany–the endless hours of sunset with twilight still happening at 10:30pm at the moment. I love these varying blues and when the last ray of light finally fades out, the birds suddenly halt their singing. But just before ending they become louder and louder the darker it gets and really give their all, as if there won't be a tomorrow.
What are you reading this summer?
I’ll definitely read Joan Didion’s Blue Nights in the original English. (I just reread it in German after I found it in the attic in my storage boxes.)
What’s your summer look/uniform?
I’ll probably be living in my oversized lilac linen dress, so good that this “tent fashion” arrived–very friendly for the northern lights like me, breezy and spacey. I hope this trend lasts forever.
