The award-winning interior design icon shares the artworks she's eyeing on Platform – and lets us in on a few of her favorite things.
If you could collect any one artist, living or dead, who would it be?
Willem de Kooning.
What about a work of art tends to draw you to it?
Art is all about emotion. I always say, once you have that special connection do not walk away! For me, it can occur with art of many varieties, from that which is super bare to something which is really colorful or textural. It’s just about the feeling and you know when you have it.
Do you consider yourself an “art collector”?
Yes, I am an avid collector. I look at everything in design as art – from the work that hangs on the walls, to sculptural furniture (chairs especially) and fashion. I store my collection in a warehouse in Downtown Los Angeles and bring pieces out when the right project comes around.
Is there a young artist you’ve discovered recently who you love?
I recently discovered Peter Bonde, whose art is a masterful use of mirrored surfaces and bold brushstrokes, so I purchased a piece for a project.
And how do you discover new artists?
Instagram, galleries and museums are all incredible places to discover new artists. I am also always attending galleries and fairs, or meeting contemporary creatives, both in my hometown of Los Angeles and whenever I travel, which provides a plethora of discovery.
Lightning Round: Favorite neighborhood business?
Erewhon for a great smoothie!
Song on repeat?
No Sense by Baby Keem.
Tech addiction?
Yes – my iPhone is always with me.
Favorite fashion designer?
Best (design world) hidden gem?
I recently visited a fantastical house and studio called Casa Neverlandia that I stumbled across in Austin while exploring. It’s a treasure trove.
Yes or no: squiggly furniture?
I’m open to all shapes and sizes . . .
Last one: We heard your son just went to college. Did he let you help design his dorm room?
I believe it’s important for him to find his own style, but we are on the hunt for an amazing piece of artwork!
