About the artist:

Sebastiaan Bremer's art pictures a world as seen through a screen. Fields of innumerable hand-drawn lines blanket his photographic images, thwarting a clear or imminent apprehension of the image beneath and evoking the sleepy twilight of half-conscious thought. Bremer's line-drawings speak of our inevitably mediated relationship to the "real." Through the clash of the drawn and the photographic, Bremer presents a world that can never be experienced directly, a world that resists complete description through any simple method or mode.

To make this work, Bremer selected several a digital photo image from his collection. Using the photo image as a template, he made a hard ground etching plate with line drawing to be printed on top of each image. Plates were made in several stages, with the artist carefully examining each state and deciding what to add to the drawing. The component phase was a brush drawing on mylar for each image, which was scanned and pushed into the digital photo image. Digital files were printed as archival inkjet prints using the Epson Stylus Pro 7800 printer with Epson Ultra Chrome K 3 inks. Etchings were printed on top of digital prints on a traditional etching press using a custom mixed Charbonnel RSR black and Graphic Chemical silver intaglio ink.
