A Night on Earth
In this gouache, sumi ink, watercolor and graphite work on paper, a distant city lights up the horizon at night while moonlit trees and grasses occupy the foreground. Iadevaia has painted this image with hundreds of strokes that wind around and within the scene, using his signature style to lead the eye on a jaunt through his world.
Drawing is a crucial part of Raymie Iadevaia’s practice, as he believes that the exploration of marks on paper remains the most fertile ground for his expansive imagination. Titled Love Song, this suite of five works on paper acts as a sonnet from the artist to the act of drawing itself. All of these artworks were instrumental in developing the artist’s large-scale paintings.

③ Artist:
Raymie Iadevaia’s paintings evoke hazy impressions of both personal memories and the imagination. The artist employs frenetic and repetitive gestures—similar to a puppeteer’s wriggling—to stain, smear and scrape layers of oil paint onto the canvas. Iadevaia’s compositions offer views of a larger and mysterious world, transporting viewers into distant but strangely familiar places.
