① Artwork:
Under the rose
This handwoven work is made using leftover industrial threads sourced from remote Chinese factories. The resulting object juxtaposes contemporary experience with a tradition that harkens back to the origins of object-making.
The tactile surfaces of Zhang's works are structures where materials clash; she is able to manipulate the specific properties of each yarn to create wildly varied textures. The artist's trans-generational practice draws influence from memories of watching her grandmother unravel and recycle old sweaters to fabricate new functional clothing. Zhang developed her own artistic language as a child by identifying recognizable imagery in the endlessly improvised arrangements of abstract shapes and colors in her grandmother’s up-cycled garments.

She combines a free and formal approach to knitting and weaving, depicting semi-abstract landscapes and animal subjects that are mysterious yet familiar using leftover industrial threads from Chinese factories. Zhang’s trans-generational practice juxtaposes contemporary experience with tradition, harkening back to the origins of object-making and taking inspiration from her grandmother's practice of up-cycling old garments.
