Meter Reader
In this gouache painting on silk, a meter reader is seen from the waist down. The artist’s imagery and materials are informed by blue-collar jobs, seen here through the emphasis on the subject’s work boots and clothing.
In her art, Maggie Crowley explores class and representations of value through labor. She roots her paintings in the clothing styles of working-class jobs by examining her subject’s physicality, attitude, and ingenuity. Raised by a hairdresser and a welder, she often refers to the visuals of cosmetology and ironwork. Her paintings begin with a body in motion, and as layers build up, the subject gets metabolized through loaded objects that reference labor unions, occupational hazards, and uniforms.
