Time Study II
This collage-based work takes time as its subject, depicting one moment chasing after another. This composition is part of the artist's series Time Studies. In these works, the artist attempts to paint time itself in a single image—or at least touch the untouchable theme of time. The artist considers this project to be so extremely grand that it is actually impossible.
About this series, Touborg says: "It’s a classical human trait to try and grasp something intangible because our interest in the thing is so strong that it doesn't matter that the attempt is futile. In each of the Time Studies, there are two frozen images that I find interesting together, but cumulatively they also allude to the passing of time, as one moment melts into the next without separation.
"The works illustrate movement in a very subtle way but [each] are also endowed with a deep and almost ancient feeling of calm. I wanted to inject a sense of fragility into these works, as if they are illustrations of something that is just about to happen. They are multi-layered in many respects; firstly the works are about the human experience of time, but they also each represent a permanent allocation of my time in their making which is fundamentally irreversible.”

Kristian Touborg’s paintings explore new artistic possibilities in the age of algorithmic intelligence by combining classical technique with digital tools. In tactile works that draw from sculpture, the artist foregrounds the importance of craft methodology while simultaneously embracing the potentiality of industrial fabrication. Touborg’s playful and intimate compositions feature painterly gestures, gauzy volumes, and collaged reflective materials—evoking both natural growth patterns and digital structures.

Kristian Touborg was born in 1987. The artist received an MFA from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2016.
