Joseph Alef was born in 1981 in Berkeley, CA. He has practiced at Creative Growth from 2001–2008 and 2013-present.

He has been included in exhibitions such as "Creative Growth: The House That Art Built" at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco and the Felix Art Fair in Los Angeles, CA; "Into The Brightness: Artists From Creativity Explored, Creative Growth & NIAD" at the Oakland Museum of California in Oakland, CA; and Nina Johnson Gallery in Miami, FL, among others.
