This still life painting depicts a vase with flowers in a lively interior. This work is part of a series by the artist where formal elements—including pattern, texture and vibrancy of color palette–play an integral role. In each painting, vases full of flowers such as hyacinth, tulips and Japanese boxwood are framed by windows, patterned wallpaper and paintings. These works express beauty while drawing viewers into a meditative reflection on the life force and the passage of time.

Artist and former educator Fonda creates philosophical and introspective paintings that serve as dialogues between an expressive romantic worldview and the insights gleaned via a mystical inner journey. In the artist's compositions, form and content intertwine, with abstraction, representation and pattern frequently employed together in a single painting. Fonda draws from philosophy and other worldviews, as well as mythological narratives and Aboriginal textiles, to create paintings that require a high level of attention from viewers.

Howard Fonda’s work simultaneously explores a romantic worldview and a mystical inner journey. The artist frequently employs abstraction, representation and pattern in a single composition—while drawing from influences ranging from mythological narratives to Aboriginal textiles. Fonda’s paintings demand a deep level of contemplation, offering attentive viewers a chance to discover their introspective and philosophical meanings.

BIO:

Howard Fonda was born in 1974. The artist received his BA in History and Fine Art from Nazareth College of Rochester in New York and his MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois.

Solo exhibitions of Fonda’s work have taken place at: Ampersand in Portland, Oregon (2021); and Goldfinch Gallery in Chicago, Illinois (2020). 

Group exhibitions that have shown Fonda’s have taken place at: The Pit in Los Angeles, California (2021); Asia Art Center in Taipei, Taiwan (2021); Massey Klein Gallery in New York City (2020); and Grifter in New York City (2020). 

Fonda was previously an instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois. The artist has lectured, served on jurying and critique panels and pursued curatorial projects at numerous universities and art centers.

Fonda lives and works in Arizona.
