Spellbound
This painting is a depiction of the artist’s fascination with the ecstatic and nearly religious nature of sports events — particularly cheerleading — as seen through the lens of her small-town, mid-western upbringing. Here, one can feel an intense, almost ecstatic emotion from the figure emphasized through washed-out lighting and a mysterious domestic interior.
Emma Beatrez’s artistic process encompasses sculpture, painting, video, and installation, with influences ranging from the occult to her midwestern upbringing. Her recent paintings explore core psychoanalytic notions of the symbolic, the real, and the emergence of new meanings through the distortion and recontextualization of established iconography.
