Stirring the Pot
To create this series of oil paintings, the artist worked without preliminary sketches, coaxing his humorous and ironic motifs out through painterly action. Employing rough caricatures reduced to a few vital marks, Schein portrays his view of the world through restless loners living on the edge of society, whom he both figuratively—and literally—exposes on the canvas.
Dan Schein’s oil paintings and drawings feature expressive brush strokes that own an immediacy and looseness. Through observations of fictional moments and absurdities, Schein imbues his figure and landscape-oriented paintings with mystical and mythical qualities through traditional painting motifs and art-historical references.
