Persuasion
This mixed-media artwork on canvas depicts a colorful figure looking back as they approach a space filled with figures representing temptation. This image explores connections between outer and inner conflict, a common theme for the artist.
Audrey Lyall uses varied materials—from collaged paper to found objects—to create densely-packed, Afro-futurist paintings, sculptures, and clothing. She navigates multiple concepts in her practice, including: racial identity and beauty standards, and explores the dichotomy between today’s artificial beauty regimens and traditional ones relating to the African diaspora. Ultimately, the artist seeks to highlight the absurdities of beauty expectations of the current climate and encapsulate the histories behind them.
