Man of Sorrows
The artist created this painting by applying and removing thin layers of paint onto wood over a number of months. With each new revision, Giannakakis shapes the work further toward abstraction to address ideas of illusion.

Los Angeles-based Andy Giannakakis creates abstract paintings that address the act of making itself. The artist revises each of his works by applying and removing paint using a distinct layering technique, thereby developing pictorial depth. By starting and stopping over a number of months, the final image acquires detail that reflects the artist’s different mental states during the process of making the work.
BIO:
Andy Giannakakis was born in 1988 in Valdosta, GA. He holds a MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, and a BFA from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.
