Heart and Toll
This piece is a reflection on money in both its physical and immaterial forms and how it impacts our bodies. The heart in the painting is full of 2-worth Palestinian coins, a currency that is no longer in use with an unknown value. This image examines the space required to accommodate the materiality of currency, something that must be carried or stored.
Amanda Boulos' work explores the shifting identities of the Palestinian diaspora while engaging with national narratives from Palestine, Lebanon and Canada. Her practice dislodges the viewer and subverts conventional depictions of Palestinian visual language and identities.
Her paintings embody an idea from philosopher Catherine Malabou that our future is undergoing an "unprecedented metamorphosis." Boulos' compositions imagine a moment when we will be capable of abandoning burdened bodies and can allow new forms and purposes to emerge.

Amanda Boulos is a visual artist and educator born in 1991.
She received a MFA in 2017 from the University of Guelph in 2017 in Canada and a BFA in 2013 from York University in Toronto, Canada.
Her work has been shown at: Richard Rhodes Dupont Projects in Toronto, Canada; Galerie Nicolas Robert in Montréal, Canada; Arsenal Contemporary Art in New York City; the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Canada; The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto, Canada; the plumb in Toronto, Canada; Embassy Culture House in London, Canada; Whippersnapper in Toronto, Canada; Trinity Square Video in Toronto, Canada; Erin Stump Projects in Toronto, Canada; and SOVA Gallery in Dawson City, Canada.
Boulos is the winner of the 20th RBC Canadian Painting Competition. She is also a member of Toronto-based project space the plumb and a programmer for the Toronto Palestine Film Festival.
