“These are my things and my experiences; what I feel when I’m there, immersed in a space,” says 30-year-old Mexico City native Alicia Ayanegui about her delicately painted vignettes of light and darkness, reflecting on the meaning of stillness and emptiness. Her paintings poetically depict her living space and commonplace objects, such as chairs, pillows, and house plants, inadvertently offering evidence of the person who owns them and revealing their personal history. Ayanegui has been selected for the esteemed Cobertizo Residency in Jilotepec, MX, and her work was featured in Artforum as well as other publications.

About the artist:

Analyzing the space she inhabits, Alicia Ayanegui paints vignettes of light and darkness within her home to reflect on the meaning of stillness and emptiness. Her work comes from the extended observation and deep analysis of her living space, which she abstracts and reconstructs into seemingly uncomplicated compositions. They act as testimony to the dialogues that unfold between Ayanegui and her surroundings. Her paintings poetically depict yet abstract commonplace objects, such as chairs, pillows, and house plants, inadvertently offering evidence of the person who owns them and revealing their personal history. “These are my things and my experiences: what I feel when I’m there, immersed in a space,” she states.
