This painting depicts a banana and banana pepper intersecting, giving form to a kneeling female figure. The gustatory heat of the pepper and the suggestive coding of the banana combine with the work's warm palette, creating an erotic image. This composition uses food as material for both linguistic and formal play.
Alexa Hawksworth's paintings feature fantastical scenes teeming with anticipation and mystique. Characters twist and turn as though viewed through a psychological strobe. Elastic figures perform as Janus-faced avatars in pursuit of self-expression, individuation and aspiration—ever caught up in the ego’s anxious negotiations. Alexa Hawksworth was born in 1994. The artist received a BFA in 2020 from Concordia University in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
